Hi everyone,
A friend of mine is working on a OSD and we are looking for some ideas of what features people are looking for in an OSD. I will say that it is by far better than any I have seen to date, and I am not just saying this because I have helped with it. It really is AWESOME. A few of you that have gotten a sneak peak at it and can attest to how good it looks.
So, if you could have what you wanted, what would it be and how much would you be willing to pay for it? Please post any ideas you have.
Thanks,
Red the Elder
There are some features id like to have:
- Real air speed measured with a prandtl probe
-real altitude measured by air pressure
-clear an intuitive display
-low price, there are many osd in the market but all have a similarity they are too expensive
-live telemetric for antenna tracking
-RC receiving strength
-emergency auto pilot which could steering the model to a home position.
What I like to see in an OSD is:
- Hi-res graphics/text
- Nice to have colour, but not important
- USB support for programming/setup of the OSD on my computer. I haven’t had a computer with an RS232 port for 10 years
- More than one screen setup accessible during flight. (eg. one showing all features, and one with only the essentials, or what ever you have defined in the setup.)
- Open source
- Easy to customize the layout of the display (through USB)
- Data logging
And of course I expect it to be dirt cheap
Well I really don't mind paying more than the other OSD's as long as there are more features.

I think it's a little bit different for fixed wing, normal helicopter and quadrocopter.
Fixed Wing only:
- Real airspeed
FW and Heli:
- maybe artificial horizont
All:
- Altitude
- Used mA
- Vario
- RC receiving strength
- Telemetrie for antenna tracking
A couple of newer quadrocopter have most of the needed sensors for these information build in .. so a OSD can be cheap.

I'm looking for:
-altitude
-vario
-mAh used
-amperage
-artificial horizon
When I get into this further, I'll start thinking about a GPS and other cool functions.
Hello,
For me a must have:
Savety feature! for the vid signal.
I lost my plane caused by a defektive OSD.
The OSD died and with it the video signal!
If i had a whish free for my next OSD it would be a feature to bypass the video signal in cause of failure!
- I think the best way would be to collect information on the plane GPS, speed, current sensor and so on.
- Transmit the information via modem on audio to ground.
- And have the OSD in the ground station!
This way there would be one source less with a highly risk of total loss.
As other mentioned usually GPS information
-Alt
-Variometer
-GPS speed
-Homing Vektor
-....
Voltage for Flight and Vid Battery
USB Port for:
- Programming with customizable screen layouts. At least 3 screens(customizeable: Information , position, size, color)
- Firmware update
Optional:
-Airspeed
-Antenna tracking
This would be easier to integrate if the OSD is already interated in the ground station. The plane just transmitting the coordinates.
-RTL
Optional as seperate Unit
Price:
100$ for the base unit:
GPS Sensor, current sensor for flight and vid battery, modem.
OSD on the ground.
Every unit seperate buyable to equip another plane or as cheap replace for damaged parts.
extra for:
RTL, antenna tracking, airspeed, temperature...
Nice greetings and fly save!
Walter
I think its also nice to bee able to Switch the unites between europ(meters and Km/h) an us(feet and mph)
and I'm very like to program to positions on the display with my Pc. So it should have an USB port.
A data logger is also nice to have.
